Prep volleyball: Hawks lose home match-up against Marysville-Getchell

Knowing a victory would insure them a spot in the 3A District 1 Volleyball Tournament, the Marysville-Getchell Chargers had plenty of motivation going into their final regular season match for 2016. Unfortunately for the Mountlake Terrace Hawks, M-G’s regular season finale was an away match at Mountlake Terrace High School.

The Chargers put together a determined effort Tuesday night and swept the Hawks 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) in the Wesco League clash; with the triumph the Chargers earned the no. 9 seed in the 3A district tournament that begins on November 1.

Going into Tuesday match against Terrace, M-G Coach Kristina Naff saw a do-or-die drive in her squad that ultimately led to the big win.

“Definitely us having seven seniors knowing that this could be it, that kind of lights a little fire. So I think that made a big difference,” she said.

In contrast, the Hawks had little to play for Tuesday as the team already knew they would be hosting a 2A District 1 Volleyball Tournament loser-out game on Nov. 1. Although Terrace stayed close to the Chargers in all three sets, the Hawks were unable to overcome multiple mistakes and challenge for the win.

Hawks’ Coach Rene Noeun plans on using the errors she saw Tuesday to prepare her squad for the postseason. One of her biggest concerns after the loss to M-G was serving.

“I think we missed, oh man, double-digit serves — I don’t even want to look at the stats right now,” Noeun said after the match.

Noeun also believed that the added strain that comes with the end of a season affected her team’s play. “I think a lot of the girls put a lot of stress on themselves; teenage girls do that,” she explained. “The thing that makes the difference is how they’re able to weed through that pressure to make it even and not pile up.”

Tuesday’s match also served as Senior Night for the Hawks, which included a pre-game ceremony honoring seniors Emilie Roldan, Gabby Calhoun, Alicia Wagoner, Ricki Miller and Leeann Weatherby. The added pomp was another factor that Noeun believed put a little more stress on the team’s ability to focus on their play.

The pressure will certainly be amped up on Tuesday, Nov. 1, when the 2A District 1 Volleyball Tournament gets underway with four loser-out matches — one of which will be the Hawks’ on their home court. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. To view the tourney’s brackets, click https://www.wescoathletics.com/tournament.php?tournament_id=1962&sport=10.
