The story of the 2015 Mountlake Terrace Hawk volleyball team was a sad saga as the squad went winless under first year coach Rene Noeun. But this year’s team has a new tale to tell.
The Hawks scored a home opener win 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-10) over the visiting Sammamish Totems Thursday at Mountlake Terrace High School. It was Terrace’s first victory on the volleyball court since Oct. 29, 2014.
Noeun was not only relieved to capture her win as a prep coach but believes the triumph may be a precursor of many chapters ahead. “It feels good,” she said; “I feel like that spell is over and a page has finally turned for us.”
While last year’s Hawks struggled in all aspects of the game, this year’s squad looked skilled at the net, handled digs well and consistently came up with strong serves on Thursday. Terrace’s balanced play led to early leads in each of the three games against the Totems, leads they would not relinquish.
In the final set Sammamish scored first, but the Hawks rattled off 10 straight points with senior Alicia Wagoner serving, capturing a dominating third-set win and match victory.
Noeun especially liked her squad’s ability to pressure Sammamish with good serves time and time again. “They were hot; they were on fire tonight; hopefully we can keep that going through the season,” she stated.
The Hawks will get plenty of chances to build upon their first win as the team will see lots of action all-day Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Cascade Tournament in Everett.
In other Terrace sports results on Thursday, the boys tennis team picked up its second consecutive road victory to start the year, a 4-3 win over the Everett Seagulls. The Hawks girls soccer team also lifted their early-season record to 2-0 with a 3-0 shutout at Sammamish.
