After a tough season with no wins in 2015, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks volleyball team had room to improve this year. The squad has done just that, picking up three wins so far in 2016.

On Tuesday, Terrace almost pulled off an upset for the ages.

The Hawks pushed one of the Wesco League’s top teams, the Stanwood Spartans, to the brink with a five-set match but came up short by just two points. The Spartans held on to defeat Terrace 3-2 with a 16-14 win in the pivotal fifth set.

By preserving the victory, the Spartans (6-1 in 2A/3A Wesco League, 7-2 overall) held on to a share of second place in the 13-team 2A/3A Wesco League standings. The Hawks dropped to 2-6 in league play, 3-7 overall.

In other MTHS sports results on Tuesday, the Hawks girls soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the Lynnwood Royals in a 2A/3A Wesco League match played at Edmonds Stadium.

In prep boys tennis action, the Hawks loss their regular season finale 4-3 to the Shorecrest Scots. Terrace’s Jeremy Ansdell ended the 2016 campaign undefeated as the senior trounced Shorecrest’s Cole Batra 6-0, 6-1. Ansdell and his Hawk teammates will next head to Bellingham for the District 1 2A Boys Tennis Tournament that begins on Friday, Oct. 14.
