Mountlake Terrace senior Ashley Fitzgerald went 4-for-5 with two RBI’s Tuesday in her final softball game played on the Hawks’ home field and helped lead her squad to a 9-7 victory over the visiting Shorewood Thunderbirds.
Fitzgerald and fellow senior teammate Lauren Miller were honored by the team prior to the Hawks’ game against the T-Birds. “Both of them are great players and great teammates. They’re great players to coach. They’ll definitely be missed (next year),” said Terrace Coach Shannon Rasmussen.
Following the kind words for her seniors, Rasmussen saw Fitzgerald, Miller and her entire squad get down to the business of their regular season finale, pounding out 15 hits in a solid win over Shorewood.
“Our defense played really good and strong, and we came up with some clutch hits that we needed,” Rasmussen noted.
Julia Brocksmith, playing shortstop for the injured Sammy Ruiz, collected three hits in four plate appearances, had four RBI’s and scored two runs. Kira Doan also went 3-for-4 and scored three runs; Gabby Calhoun picked up a couple hits and Jazz Zenk smashed a two-RBI double to get the Hawk scoring started in the first inning.
Zenk also earned the victory on the mound Tuesday, giving up just five hits in five innings pitched and recording three strikeouts.
With all their offensive production, Terrace led 9-2 after five innings before Shorewood put some doubt to the game’s final outcome by scoring two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh.
The T-Birds Kendall Adams went 3-for-4 in the game with five RBI’s, including a home run in the sixth inning and a two-out two-RBI double in the seventh. But the comeback threat was neutralized when Zenk, who had taken over the Hawk pitching duties in the third inning, struck out the final T-Bird batter to end the game.
With the win, Terrace finished the 2016 regular season with a 14-6 overall record, the best for a Rasmussen-coached team in her four years at the helm.
“It was a great record (14-6), and knowing that (those) six loses we were right in there – a couple of those games could have gone either way,” Rasmussen said. “I think we’re pretty confident going in to districts with what we have and we’re hoping that we can go on and improve that record.”
Mountlake Terrace will head to the postseason District 1 3A Softball Tournament as the third-place team from the Wesco League South Conference. The Hawks and Edmonds-Woodway finished with identical 12-6 league records and split their two games against each other, but Terrace earned the tie-breaker by snatching a win over the South Conference’s leader Meadowdale back on Apr. 29; E-W went 0-2 against the Mavericks this season.
The Hawks will open district play at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett against the Wesco League North Conference second place team, either Everett or Marysville-Pilchuck. All teams will play two games of the double-elimination tourney on May 17; squads still eligible will return for the final day of district play on May 19.
In other Terrace action on Tuesday, the Hawk boys soccer team kept their 2016 postseason going with a 2-0 win over the Ferndale Golden Eagles in a loser-out match of the District 1 3A Boys Soccer Tournament.
Terrace will face another elimination match on Thursday, May 12, when they face the Shorewood T-Birds at Shoreline Stadium (site is tentative). To view the entire District 1 3A Boys Soccer Tournament bracket, click http://www.wescoathletics.com/tournament.php?tournament_id=1885&sport=9.
