While the weather was hot for Mountlake Terrace spring sports teams on Saturday, the real heat will be on Tuesday, May 12, when both the baseball and boys soccer squads will have to play in loser-out games after being defeated in first-round District 1 3A tournament action on Saturday.
Despite a strong effort, the Hawks baseball team fell to the top-seeded Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks 11-8 in Marysville. Mountlake Terrace’s boys soccer squad lost 4-1 to the No. 2 seed Shorewood T-Birds at Shoreline Stadium.
On the baseball diamond, Mountlake Terrace wasn’t able to hold an early 5-0 lead against the high-scoring Tomahawks, who were averaging more than eight-and-a-half runs per game in their last five outings. Then with the game tied 8-8, the Hawks gave up three runs to M-P in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mountlake Terrace was able to bring the tying run to the plate in their half of the seventh, but ultimately couldn’t score the runs necessary to extend the game.
Hawk Drew Serres had three RBIs in the game, all off a two-out, bases-clearing triple in Mountlake Terrace’s big second inning. Adam Lorraine added a two-run single in the fifth to begin a Mountlake Terrace comeback after the Tomahawks had scored eight unanswered runs
Ben Reijonen was saddled with the loss after coming in to relieve Raiden Silva in the sixth inning; Silva had taken over for starter Jason Shevenko earlier in the game.
The Tomahawks move on to face the Lynnwood Royals in the district semi-finals while Mountlake Terrace will match-up against the Ferndale Golden Eagles on Tuesday in a district elimination game to be played at Ferndale High School.
On the soccer pitch, senior Alec Somers scored his first postseason prep goal Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks were trampled by Shorewood 4-1.
The four goals scored by the T-Birds were the most the team has tallied in a game all season; their previous high of three goals was scored against Mountlake Terrace in a match on April 28.
The Hawks face district tournament elimination on Tuesday when they travel to Marysville to face M-P. The Tomahawks were relegated to the loser-out matchup after going down to Edmonds-Woodway 3-1 on Saturday. Marysville-Pilchuck is 0-4-1 in their last five matches, but Mountlake Terrace has struggled of late also, losing five-in-a-row and going 1-8-1 in their previous ten matches.
