The first day of the District 1 girls 3A softball tournament featured a little bit of everything: Shutouts, blowouts and, in the last game of the day, an Edmonds-Woodway finish for the ages. At the end of the day, all three Edmonds School District teams advanced to Thursday. Meadowdale, which won both its games, has earned a berth in next week’s state tournament and will be playing for the District 1 title. Meanwhile, Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds-Woodway, after dropping their first games, both won their second to advance to Thursday, needing two wins to move forward.

Mountlake Terrace’s game against No. 4 seed Marysville Pilchuck was by far the longest of the afternoon. The Hawks took the lead for the first time 6-4 after batting in the third, but in the home half, the Tomahawks responded with seven runs to go up 11-6. Terrace scored four of its own in the top of the fourth, but the Hawks’ offense couldn’t keep up with M-P, which went on to score seven more runs to take the game 18-11.

Mountlake Terrace staved off elimination in its second game of the day, beating Oak Harbor 2-0. The Hawks got one run in the second on back-to-back, two-out doubles; the first by Jazz Zenk, who was then doubled in by Ashley Fitzgerald. In the fifth, this time Fitzgerald would double, scoring the second and final run on a single by Sammy Ruiz.

Gabby Calhoun went the distance on the hill for the Hawks, striking out 10 along the way.

Next up for Mountlake Terrace is a game against Glacier Peak, Thursday at 4 p.m.

  1. Good job covering the Hawks! We appreciate it. One correction, the picture with the caption for Lauren Miller is actually Sarah Davis. I am sure both would like their pics in the news. šŸ™‚
