After playing what coach George Dremousis called its worst game of the season – a 4-1 defeat to the Arlington Eagles on Apr. 24 – the Mountlake Terrace boys soccer team was looking to get back to winning ways on Tuesday against the Shorewood T-Birds. But an all-too-familiar letdown for the Hawks led to another loss.

Mountlake Terrace surrendered a goal in the final minute of the first half, giving the visiting T-Birds a big swing of momentum that they would carry on to a 3-1 victory over the Hawks in a Wesco 3A matchup played at Lynnwood High School.

Senior Marco Shifflette knocked in a loose ball off a scramble in front of the Mountlake Terrace goal in the 39th minute to give the T-Birds a 1-0 lead. Giving up late first half goals to opponents has been an on-going struggle for the Hawks this season.

Shorewood’s Kabir Kahn pushed the lead to 2-0 just three minutes into the second half when he scored in the lower left-hand corner off a penalty kick.

The goals scored by Shorewood just before and after the halftime break were especially exasperating for Dremousis. “I’d say we had 60 percent of the possession tonight, but it was a five-minute game: the last 30 seconds of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half,” he said. “We just can’t make those mental errors.”

“I’ll put some of that on me; we’ve got to work on that at practice,” Dremousis said. “It’s just frustrating to me.”

Shorewood picked up a third goal in the 53rd minute when sophomore Alan Corrales slipped a shot on the short side past Hawk goalkeeper Genaro Ruis.

Mountlake Terrace got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute when senior Alec Somers converted a penalty kick. Somers had earned the spot kick after being fouled in the 18-yard box by T-Bird defender Ousainou Bojang.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities for more goals throughout the match. In the 59th minute Shorewood’s Sven Pandel just missed putting a spectacular overhead bicycle kick on frame; ten minutes later a Somers free kick from 25 yards out sailed inches high and wide of the T-Bird goal.

Dremousis thought his squad could have easily had a couple more goals if it hadn’t been for miss kicks. “That’s what separates good teams from the average teams,” he said. “Good teams finish those.”

The Hawks have two more regular season games next week, May 4 at Oak Harbor and May 6 against first place Shorecrest, before beginning postseason 3A District tournament play on May 9.
