Last year’s 2A girls’ basketball state titlists, the Shorecrest Scots, made their first trip to Mountlake Terrace High School this season on Wednesday and played like defending state champions. The Scots easily defeated the Mountlake Terrace Hawks 61-27 in the 2A/3A Wesco League opener for both squads.
The Scots jumped out to a 23-5 lead over Terrace after the first quarter and never looked back on their way to their third win of the season.
Only four Hawks got into the scoring sheet on Wednesday; senior Jorie Lambert led the team with nine points. Jazz Zenk scored seven points before fouling out of the game.
Shorecrest, back into the 3A classification this season, has plenty of new faces on their 2016-2017 roster as only four players are returning from last year’s 2A championship squad. Newcomers Audrey Dietz, a sophomore, and Kira Wood, a freshman, led the Scots in scoring on Wednesday; Dietz tallied 13 points while Wood added 12 points in the victory.
The Hawks (0-1 in Wesco League play, 1-5 overall) will have a chance to get back into the win column on Friday, Dec. 16, when they face the struggling Maryville-Getchell Chargers, winners of only one in five games.
After games on Dec. 16 and Dec. 21, Shorecrest (1-0 in Wesco League play, 3-2 overall) will return to Mountlake Terrace High School to be one of 12 teams taking part in the Mountlake Terrace Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29 and 30.
