After averaging more than 13 runs-per-game in their three-game sweep over Shorecrest last week, Edmonds-Woodway Warriors was brought back down to earth Tuesday as Mountlake Terrace pulled away for an 8-3 win in a Wesco 3A South matchup at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
E-W picked up just one hit against Mountlake Terrace starting pitcher Ben Reijonen, who went six innings, gave up one run and struck out two to pick up the victory for the Hawks.
Senior Jaden Yackley went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs to lead a Hawk squad that pounded out 11 hits against Warrior pitchers Austin Vaughn Jones and Kosta Cooper. Jason Shevenko and Zayn Phillips smacked their first home runs of the season for Mountlake Terrace – Shevenko a solo shot early in the game and Phillips a 3-run dinger in the seventh inning.
Warrior Joey Rees cracked a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning off of Hawk reliever Jack Fiorillo, but it was too-little too-late for E-W who fell to 3-4 in league play. With the victory Terrace evened its league mark at 4-4.
The three-game series between Wesco League 3A South rivals continues on Wednesday, Apr. 7, as the teams take the field at Mountlake Terrace High School at 4 p.m.
