The Mountlake Terrace Arts Advisory Commission is presenting the Patty McNamee Painting Exhibit for the month of December at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W.

Growing up as an Air Force Brat, McNamee had the privilege to experience both coasts of the United States at an early age. After her father’s retirement, McNamee began her art career in elementary school in Southern California. As a way of making money, McNamee and her friends put together art shows on the neighbor’s garage door, where she made her first sale.

McNamee went on to graduate from California State University, Fullerton with a degree in art with an emphasis in illustration. “I spent time in college drawing illustrations centered around a visual play on words,” McNamee said. “I still have sketch books filled with the words or sentences I can see as an illustration or photograph.”

Before falling in love with family history, Patty worked with a number of graphic design firms and an ad agency for 10 years. While working on her own family history, McNamee made a pest of herself at the local National Archives in Southern California, and they decided to hire her. As an archivist, McNamee currently works at the National Archives at Seattle, where she is still using her art background to produce exhibits and brochures for the public.

Over the past few years, McNamee has renewed her love of art. She enjoys working in oils and watercolor and is exploring relief printmaking. Her awards include Third Place in New Worlds of Orange County Magazine Photography Contest. She has exhibited work in the Edmonds Arts Festival in 2012 and Arts of the Terrace. When not painting, McNamee enjoys chocolate, golfing, hiking, ice cream, and photography in the great outdoors. Otherwise, McNamee spends her time reading or listening to jazz.

The Mountlake Terrace Arts Advisory Commission oversees the library exhibits as part of its mission to promote cultural events in the community.

The show runs through Dec. 31 at the Mountlake Terrace Library, Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 5 p.m.
