New MLTnews.com Site Design

MLTnews.com is about 7 months old now and I thought it was about time for a new look. Our logo remains the same but we have a new, fresh look on the site as well as a couple new features. Near the bottom of the home page, posts that contain videos are highlighted in the video playlist. There is a new “Featured Posts” section near the top that will highlight some of the best recent posts.

I hope you enjoy the new look!

  1. I personally am not a big fan of the new design, mainly because of font usage and size, but also general ‘size’ of everything.

First, I’m not a big fan of serif fonts on websites, especially romans. Although the font here appears to be Georgia, the best serif font for screen reading, a sans-serif is traditionally easier on the eyes and better looking. Also, the headings are massive!! Can we take them down a point or two or 20? Bottom line, most everything is either too large or too spaced out making for a lot of scrolling even on a large monitor like my 22″.

Also, it seems that the sort option on post replies is gone, making long threads require a full scroll all the way to the last post, rather than sort by old/new as the old design allowed.

Many of the images are over sized as well, making them dominate over the article rather than enhancing it. And that ‘facebook’ graphic on the right? Is that ad space or a link??

I DO however like the colors, and general style of the site… it’s just that everything is so BIG!

  2. Oh, and I was going to reply to my post to state that my first reply is a sans-serif font, but the article is a serif font…. so now I’m seeing at least 4 fonts on the main site, which is publishing no-no… when I realized, the ‘Reply’ button is gone, removing the ability to REPLY directly to someone’s reply, but forcing a user to reply only to the article. Is that by design? I liked being able to reply to a posted comment… it created debate and interest.

    1. Thanks for the suggestions. I’m still tweaking things and I know there are still a couple issues. Like the “reply” button location. Keep giving me feedback as you use the site and I’ll try to incorporate it.
