The MTHS Sports Booster Club is continuing its popular Athlete Highlights in each during the 2013-2014 school year, beginning with its September selections of senior Courtney Hammer of the cheer squad and senior Brett Potter of the varsity football team.
Hammer’s athletic background is extensive, with nine years of gymnastics experience, five years playing volleyball, and five years running track. While being a member of the cheer squad may be new for her, the team’s coach Jessica Bos is impressed with what she has seen so far.
“Courtney is (in her) first year on our squad, but you would never know,” Bos said. “Her hard work and dedication the last three months has made her truly stand out.
“Courtney is a natural athlete and a leader when it comes to conditioning,” Bos continued. “Her strength is a wonderful addition to our stunting. This girl has such a big heart, we are lucky to have her as part of our team.”
Potter has been a familiar face around the Terrace gym and athletic fields throughout his high school career. “Brett is a four-year football player, three-year letterman and a two-year captain,” said MTHS head football coach Tony Umayam. “He is a great example of being an excellent teammate, student and football player.”
“Brett has a tremendous work ethic and is seen by his peers as a strong unwavering leader,” Umayam stated. “Brett is one of the few three-sport letterman as he is also a member of the wrestling and track and field teams.”
The MTHS Sports Booster Club will honor student athletes chosen each month by school coaches. Posters profiling the students will appear around town at select businesses.
