For seven innings, the Mountlake Terrace softball team stood toe-to-toe with first-place Meadowdale on Tuesday, then with a single run pulled ahead of the Mavericks in the eighth. The Hawks couldn’t complete the big upset though, as the team gave up two runs in the bottom of the eighth and lost a heartbreaker 2-1 at Meadowdale High School.

Maverick Alyssa Reuble hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to give Meadowdale the walk-off victory and an undefeated Wesco league record of 10-0. The Mavericks are 14-2 overall. The loss drops Terrace to 6-4 in league play, 10-7 overall.

The Hawks scored their only run of the game in the extra frame with a lead-off single by Sammy Harter, a sacrifice bunt by Cassandra Cariker, another single by Hannah Wilcox and a fielder’s choice by Hannah Fickle.

“It was definitely a game of highs and lows, and the girls were pretty bummed that we lost,” said Hawk Head Coach Shannon Rasmussen, who did find a silver lining in the defeat. “We battled the entire game and stayed even with one of the best teams around, so it also gives us some confidence heading into the last three games of the regular season,” she said.

The Hawks have a couple days to put the tough lost behind them. They finish the regular season with three straight home games, the first on Friday, May 3, against the Glacier Peak Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Hawks Live Sports Network on MLTnews.com beginning at 3:50 p.m.
