MTHS Hawkeye staff members bring home national journalism awards

    hawkeyelogo2015-475x111Congratulations to staff members from the Mountlake Terrace High School student newspaper, the Hawkeye, for their awards at the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association national convention last week in Orlando, Fla.

    More than 6,000 students, educators and media professionals attended the four-day conference at the Disney World Dolphin Resort Hotel and Convention Center.

    “It was a fantastic trip and these students represented us exceedingly well,” said Hawkeye advisor and MTHS journalism teacher Vince DeMiero, who emailed a list of the following winners:

    Best of Show · In the prestigious “Best of Show” contest, the Hawkeye placed 5th in Newspaper Special Edition for its issue focusing on education.
    NSPA Story of the Year · In the Sports Story of the Year for 2015, Irvin Zhang earned an Honorable Mention.
    NSPA Story of the Year · In the Multimedia Story of the Year for 2015, Paxtyn Merten and Isaac Otis earned 3rd Place.
    NSPA Story of the Year · In the Editorial of the Year for 2015, the staff of the Hawkeye earned 2nd Place.
    On-Site Write-Offs · 2,003 students participated in on-site competitions where their work was judged against tough national standards. Here’s how the Hawkeye staff fared:
    Press Law & Ethics · Stephi Smith earned one of just three “Superior” awards
    Commentary Writing · Josh Morrison earned a “Superior”
    Editorial Cartooning · Hannah Schuster earned an “Excellent”
    Newspaper/Newsmagazine Sports Photography · Jack Fiorillo earned an “Excellent”
    Graphic Design: Infographic · Netania Riviera earned an “Excellent”
    Literary Magazine Poetry · Max Tracy earned an “Excellent”
