Twenty-six residents received the calls, which were in error, according to Mountlake Terrace Assistant City Manager/interim Public Works Director Scott Hugill.
The City contracts with a company that makes courtesy calls to customers to let them know that they are late in paying their bill. The company also calls to let customers know when their water service is going to be disconnected due to non-payment.
Apparently, the company called the residents who were late in paying their bills but played a recorded message that said the resident’s water service was going to be shut off.
The City directed the company to make a second call to the affected customers later in the morning apologizing for the earlier recorded message and informing residents that their water service is not being disconnected.
Hugill said that it takes about 45 days after the non-payment of a bill for a resident’s water service to be disconnected.
