Former Mountlake Terrace High School baseball standout Aaron Brooks told MLTnews.com that he will sign a contract with the Seattle Mariners’ organization after being drafted by the team earlier this week.
“I am extremely excited to join them, and yes I will for sure sign,” Brooks said on Thursday. “It’s a dream come true for me.”
Brooks graduated from MTHS in 2010 and led the Hawks baseball team that season to a record of 18-7 and a spot in the state 4A baseball tournament. The 6-6 right-handed pitcher was named to All-State and All-Wesco select teams his senior year.
Brooks has been told by a baseball scout that his first assignment in the Mariners’ organization would likely be with this summer’s Everett Aquasox team. “I have gone to a lot of those games at Everett Memorial Stadium,” Brooks said, “and I always said I could be playing on that team some day.”
The Aquasox open their 2012 season with an exhibition game versus the Everett Merchants on Wednesday, June 13.
As a college freshman, Brooks attended Gonzaga University in Spokane and made 10 relief appearances and one start for the Zags during the 2011 season. Then last summer Brooks played for the Wenatchee Applesox of the West Coast League, a Northwest summer collegiate league. He finished the season with a 5-0 record and a 2.89 ERA in 12 game appearances.
This past year Brooks attended Edmonds Community College. He made 11 starts for the Tritons, finishing with a 7-3 record, a 2.71 ERA and 60 strikeouts.
