This week, the Mountlake Terrace Business Association is taking steps to buy a new van and donate it to the Mountlake Terrace Senior Center.

The senior center is currently driving its seniors around in a 12-passenger van with no handicapped accessibility. The van was built in 1993 and has a very high mileage, according to Mike Cooper, Executive Director of the MLTSC.

“The vehicle has been well cared for, but it is also showing signs of age and being well loved,” Cooper said. “We use our van at least once a week to take seniors on field trips in the area, however if we had a newer vehicle we would consider adding shuttle service to and from the senior center.”

The MLTBA is raising funds to buy a 14-passenger handicap accessible personal transportation van and present it to the MLTSC.

One-half of Americans 65 and older do not have access to public transportation, and more than half of all non-drivers 65 and older stay at home in a given day because they don’t have transportation options. It is important for seniors to remain mobile to keep their social independence with friends and family. It also helps reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Younger seniors look forward to partnering up with their peers and travel to local theaters, wine tours, bike rides, hikes, Stevens Pass, Swimming lessons and cooking classes.

Residents can join the MLTBA at the following events to help buy the new bus.
