The cities of Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood and Edmonds were recently presented a Program Award from the Washington Recreation and Park Association (WRPA) for their three-year, third-grade swim lesson program funded by a grant from Verdant Health Commission.
The award was announced late last month at the WRPA Annual Conference & Trade Show in Vancouver, Wash.
Now in its second year, the multi-agency swim program allows third graders in most of South Snohomish County to receive free swimming lessons at any of three local pools: the Mountlake Terrace Recreation Pavilion, the Lynnwood Recreation Center and Pool, or the Edmond’s Yost Pool. During its first year in 2011-2012, more than 420 third graders participated in 720 sets of swimming lessons through the program.
Vouchers for the swimming lessons were distributed to this year’s Edmonds School District third graders last fall, and are redeemable for swimming lesson sessions through this summer.
Verdant Health Commission is the health and wellness organization of Public Hospital District No. 2 serving south Snohomish County.
