Mountlake Terrace High School senior Kelly Herbig has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Mike Watson Memorial “For Love of the Game” Scholarship. Herbig was awarded the $500 scholarship Monday at the Mountlake Terrace Senior Awards Night.
Herbig was a three-year player in the Mountlake Terrace volleyball program; during her senior year she was a member of the Cheer team.
Applicants for the scholarship were asked to answer two questions: how has playing sports helped you in your life, and what encouraged you to keep playing? Here’s an excerpt from Herbig’s essay:
Throughout my years as an athlete I have developed and come to know my leadership skills. Leadership skills are something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I want to be remembered for the character of the person I became and I believe the valuable lessons sports taught me will have made an extremely positive contribution on my character.
The Mike Watson Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Mountlake Terrace High School Sports Booster Club, is awarded each year in remembrance of Mike Watson, a 1982 graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, coach and supporter of prep athletics who passed away in 2012. The scholarship is made available to a senior who has participated in a recognized sport at the school for at least one season and has meet the district qualifications for grades and class enrollment to participate in sports.
Past winners of the scholarship are Maddy Kristjanson (2014) and Michael Lotz (2013).
