Mountlake Terrace High School senior Michael Lotz was presented with the 2013 Mike Watson Memorial “For the Love of the Game” Scholarship on Monday night. The $500 scholarship was given at the school’s Senior Awards Night on Monday.
The scholarship program is funded by the MTHS Sports Booster Club and is a memorial to Mike Watson, who passed away last August. Watson, a 1982 graduate of MTHS, was involved in youth athletic programs locally and around the Puget Sound area. This was the first year for the scholarship.
Lotz, a member of the MTHS Class of 2013, was a four-year athlete in the Hawk basketball program, plus involved with track and field during his junior year.
One criterion for selecting the scholarship winner was applicants’ essays addressing two questions: How has playing sports helped you in your life, and what encouraged you to keep playing. “Living up to the high expectation of our coaches everyday was difficult, but with the mental toughness I gained during the season, it made me a stronger person mentally as well as physically,” Lotz wrote as part of his essay.
In another award of note, Melissa Reid was presented with the Golden Acorn Award, given by the school’s Parent Teacher Association in recognition of the dedication and service of a volunteer. Reid was instrumental in bringing attention to, and fundraising for, the Watson family following Mike’s death and during wife Kellie’s on-going battle with ovarian cancer. Reid has also been an active volunteer in many MTHS programs over the past four years.
