The Mountlake Terrace Hawks hit the field for the first day of football practice on Wednesday in preparation for a season with plenty of unknowns ahead.

The Hawks had a big turnout of players on Day 1, but with one notable exception: Senior Devante Downs will miss the entire season due to a torn ACL suffered in June. Downs, a highly recruited running back who announced he will play for Cal beginning in 2014, was expected to carry the load on offense for a team that will start a junior at quarterback after losing last year’s starter, Beau Kennedy, to graduation.

The defense also lost a key starter from last year’s squad; after playing in the Hawk defensive backfield last season Class of 2013 member Mason Stone is hoping to land a spot on the roster of the Division I University of Idaho Vandals this fall.

Terrace qualified for post-season play for just the second time school history last season, but matching that effort without Downs, Kennedy and Stone this season may be a tough chore for Head Coach Tony Umayam.

The Hawk’s first game is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6, against Stanwood. The game is set for 5 p.m. at Edmonds Stadium and will be broadcast live on the Sound Live Sports Network on MLTnews.com.

  1. Doug… you spent more time lamenting the past in this article than you did talking about how the Hawks are ‘spreading wings’. It was actually rather depressing. Next time I’ll just read the headline and feel good there. Way to get us excited about our home town team there… Meadowdale fan?

    • It’s true, the team has obstacles to overcome with the loss of key players to graduation and injury, but the rest of the team is energetic and eager to hit the field this season. There is lots of good talent that is entering Varsity team, and returning as seniors this year. GO HAWKS!
