For a debut, things couldn’t have gone much better.
The Mountlake Terrace Hawks girls’ soccer team peppered the Kingston Buccaneers’ goal with 26 shots, showed strength and determination all over the pitch, and came away with a 2-1 victory in the first match for new coach Alvin Little Tuesday night at Lynnwood High School.
“I thought the girls played the game really well,” Little said after the match. “They were really aggressive, physical; they did me proud. I was really pleased with our first effort.”
Junior Donnya Kvinge scored the first goal for the Hawks midway through the first half, nudging in a cross inside the 6-yard box with her midsection.
Terrace picked up its second goal early in the second half when a Kingston defender inadvertently kicked the ball into her own net.
The Buccaneers kept things interesting in the second half when they scored in the 50th minute. Junior Georgia Richens looped in a header over the outstretched arms of Terrace goalkeeper Madi Sadler to pull within one goal, but the Hawks’ defense refocused and didn’t allow another Kingston shot on goal for the rest of the match.
The only disappointment for Little and the Hawks was in not converting more of their chances to score. “We’ll work on our finishing,” Little said.
Terrace will play its first road match of the 2016 season Thursday when the Hawks travel to Sammamish to take on the Totems; first kick is set for 7:30 p.m.
In other MTHS action on Tuesday, the boys tennis team swept the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks 7-0 while the volleyball squad dropped its season opener to Squalicum 3-1.
