Going into their Oct. 15 match, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks were flying high, sharing first place in the Wesco 3A girls volleyball standings, sporting an undefeated conference record, and hoping to build upon an overall seven-match winning streak. But the team lost to a visiting Stanwood Spartans squad wanting to make a name for itsefl in the highly competitive league.

The Spartans defeated Terrace 3-1 at Mountlake Terrace High School, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 Tuesday night. The Hawks dropped out of a first- place tie in the Wesco 3A standings, falling to 4-1 in league play and 7-3 overall. Stanwood stayed in a fourth-place tie with Everett at 3-2 in the league, 7-3 overall.

The teams went back and forth, exchanging leads in the first two games of their match, with the Hawks winning the first and Stanwood the second. But the Spartans showed their resolve by taking a 17-9 lead in the third game, and even though the Hawks tried to fight back, coming as close as 19-18, it became obvious they couldn’t match the speed, versatility or spirit of the visitors.

“Sometimes you just have an off night,” conceded Terrace Head Coach Marietta Snyder. “Nobody was on; it wasn’t like just one person was off. The whole team was a little bit off tonight.”

While disappointed with her squad’s effort, Snyder’s post-match address to the team remained calmed and calculated. “It doesn’t do you any good to yell at them; they all know they lost,” she said.

Spartan Head Coach Erik Titus called it a “huge win” for his squad. “It’s always a good measuring stick for us to come into somebody’s place and see how we play, against somebody who’s 4-0,” he said.

Next up for Terrace is first-place Meadowdale, who will be bringing its 5-0 league mark to Mountlake Terrace High School for a big match on Thursday, Oct. 17. The Hawks will be looking to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Mavericks on Sept. 10; a win would tie Mountlake Terrace with Meadowdale for first place in the Wesco 3A Conference. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
