When you’ve got a good track team, you expect to excel in the big meets. The Mountlake Terrace Hawks did just that at the 2nd annual Terrace Relays held at Edmonds Stadium on Saturday.
A number of Hawks won their events in the 16-team meet, led by freshman Chinne Okoronkwo who picked up three first-place finishes in the girls’ pole vault, the long jump and the triple jump. Okoronko also anchored the 4×100 relay team that placed third. Sophomore McKenna Hunt earned another first place spot for the Hawks, winning the 100-meter hurdles.
The Terrace boys’ 4×100 relay team of Joshua Kim, Mason Stone, Quinnell Mason and Duane Dahl looked impressive, winning the event with a their season-best time of 43.75. In addition, Dahl and Mason were members of the 4×400 relay team that picked up a third place. Dahl had a busy — and productive — day at the meet, also nabbing a third place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
The Hawks swept the top three spots in the boys triple jump; Gifton Okoronkwo won the event with a leap of 43-4.75, his best of the season. Tye Esparza placed second, while Dahl grabbed the third spot.
Other Hawk notables on Saturday included Jack Pierce finishing second in the 3000 meter, Daniel An picking up a second in the pole vault, Esparza finishing third in the high jump, Beau Kennedy grabbing third in the javelin, Mikea Hawkins-Tanner and Brett Potter finishing third and fourth respectively in the shot put, and the team of Conrad Bratz, Kyle Rhodes, Yohans Tewolde and Joseph May placing third in the 6-2-4, 800-meter sprint medley.
For the Terrace girls, the 6-2-4,800-meter sprint medley team of Rachel Fesler, Katherine Walter, Marie Auch-Schwelk and Vera Okolo finished third in their event. Walter, a freshman, also placed fourth in the 1500 meter run.
