In a tightly-played game that featured 12 lead changes and six ties, the Mountlake Terrace boys basketball team found themselves on the short end when time ultimately ran out and suffered their first defeat of the season, 58-53, to the Franklin Quakers on Saturday.
The match-up, featuring two teams ranked in the top six of the Seattle Times 3A State Boys Basketball rankings, was part of the Muscle Milk Preview played at Highline Community College in Des Moines.
The Hawks took a one-point lead, 53-52, thanks to a Yonnes Tewolde free throw with 1:04 remaining in the game, but Franklin answered by scoring the final six points of the night. Quaker Jamari Lewis hit a jumper in the lane with 44 seconds left, then teammate Keith Smith made four free throws inside the final 17 seconds to secure the victory for Franklin.
Terrace was led in scoring by senior Greg Bowman with 25 points, the only Hawk scorer in double figures. Smith led the Quakers with 29 points; Eugene Artison added 14 for Franklin.
