For the past two years the Mountlake Terrace Hawks have had to face Ferndale in the 3A District 1 Baseball Tournament, and each time the team came away with a victory. This season the Hawks found themselves in postseason play matched up against the Golden Eagles again, and this time wound up on the losing end of a 2-0 score.

For Terrace (12-9) to make a return to the 3A State Tournament this year, the team will have to win three straight district games beginning with a Tuesday, May 7, match-up against Stanwood at Mountlake Terrace High School. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The shutout loss at Ferndale (15-7) ended an eight-game winning streak for the Hawks, a stretch where Terrace averaged more than eight runs per game. The Hawks could only muster six hits against the Golden Eagles’ starting pitcher Brady Bathues. Despite the lack of hitting the Hawks did strand nine base runners in the game.

“We had our opportunities, we just couldn’t get a clutch hit,” Hawk Coach Andrew Watters told the Hawks Live Sports Network following the game.

Terrace loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning after singles by Lucas Pope and Chase Perez, and a base on balls for Wyatt Allemann, but Jason Shevenko flied out to right field to end the Hawk comeback chance.

Pope, Perez and Allemann provided another opportunity to score in the second inning, but a base-running error by Pope and two flyouts by Shevenko and Drew Serres stranded Perez and Allemann on base and kept Terrace off the scoreboard.

The top two-thirds of the Terrace lineup went a combined 4-for-22 in the game, 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Hawk starting pitcher Dominic DeMiero gave up just six hits and struck out four in the loss. The only runs DeMiero surrendered were set up when in the third inning a passed ball put two Golden Eagles in scoring position; Bathues followed with a two-run single, providing the only scoring of the day.

The other three Wesco 3A South division entries in the district tournament all posted victories on Saturday; Shorewood, the state’s top ranked team in the Seattle Times 3A baseball poll, was an easy 9-1 winner over Stanwood, Glacier Peak slipped by Oak Harbor 2-1, and Meadowdale beat Marysville-Pilchuck 6-1. The top three teams in the double-elimination tourney advance to state play beginning May 18.
