A new offering at the Off Leash Area Edmonds (OLAE) dog park can make a trip to the beach a little extra indulgent for dogs and their two-legged parents.
As of Friday, May 6, The Seattle Barkery will be at OLAE every Friday this summer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on the occasional Friday when a private event is scheduled.
The Seattle Barkery is a food truck serving up freshly baked, homemade baked dog treats, fried chicken feet and dog-friendly ice cream.
Dawn Ford owns the truck with her husband Ben. Dawn does all of the baking and Ben does all of the frying.
“My wife won’t touch the duck necks or chicken feet,” Ben said.
Opening a dog-friendly bakery was always Dawn’s dream. In October 2014, Ben said the opportunity arose and they decided to go for it. In May 2015, The Seattle Barkery made its first sale.
Now, they roam around to Seattle-area dog parks to sell their goods. A calendar of where they will be located can be found on their website. They also host private events.
All of the baked goods are made without preservatives. The Seattle Barkery’s top selling items are bacon “pupcakes” and peanut butter and pumpkin pretzels. Paw jars containing a number of biscuits also sell well.
Ben said the couple has been trying to get into OLAE for a couple of months and they are very excited to finally be allowed there.
“We love this park,” Ben said. “You get the best of both worlds. You get the water and lovely scenery, and there are a bunch of friendly dogs.”
The Fords own three dogs of their own — two Pekingese mixes, ages 14 and 5, and an 8-year-old Australian shepherd mix. All three are rescue dogs.
That’s not their only connection to dog rescues. All of their tips go directly to Old Dog Haven, a local rescue that finds foster and permanent homes for senior dogs without homes, including the Fords’ 14-year-old dog. As of May 1, The Seattle Barkery has given more than $2,200 to the rescue from its tips.
The Seattle Barkery also offers treats for its human customers, including popscicles, sodas and coffee.
