Here’s a unique twist on summer camp that involves fiscal, rather than physical, fitness. Growing Wealth from the Start camp in downtown Edmonds is aimed at providing kids with “the strong financial foundation they need to grow into financially responsible adults…and have FUN while learning,” according to camp organizers.

In a program partnered with Junior Achievement, Growing Wealth from the Start uses active learning and engages students using games, activities and discussion beyond the classroom. Students have fun by exploring, experimenting and developing new ways to view finances in their lives. Among the lessons taught:

— The value of money.

— The importance of a budget, and how to create one.

— How and why to be responsible spenders and motivated saver.

— Time-tested money habits that will set them up for financial success as adults.

— How to have their own money so they will stop asking for yours.

All classes are taught by certified local teachers and also feature tours of local businesses and banks. The curriculum aligns with Common Core education standards, and classroom ratios will be one adult to less then seven students.  Parent involvement is encouraged both in class and at home.

The camp runs a full week from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The schedule is July 20-24 for ages 10-14 and July 27- 31 for ages 15-17. Cost is $395. Scholarships are available – email growingwealthfromthestart@gmail.com for an application. Space is limited, and the registration deadline is July 4.
