Graffiti in MLT. What are your thoughts?

We have started working on a project with the Seattle Times and its news partners about graffiti in the region. We’re not sure yet what exactly the project will look like, but we thought we would start by asking you, MLTnews readers, what you thought of the graffiti problem in Mountlake Terrace.

First, is there even a graffiti problem in Mountlake Terrace? Do you see graffiti in the city on a regular basis? Where are problem areas? Do you feel private land owners and the city respond quickly to clean it up? Does seeing or not seeing graffiti in Mountlake Terrace make you feel more/less safe?

Any other comments about graffiti in Mountlake Terrace?

      1. Oh man! +1 for cultural awareness. -10 for skill. Too bad City Hall is already being torn down. Would have been neat to do a graffiti class there šŸ˜‰

  1. I guess it’s a problem, although I don’t think it’s any worse than every other city. Sometimes I think graffiti can be done nicely and actually look good. But lazy graffiti like the pictures shown above make me a sad panda.

  2. I agree some graffiti is very artisitc and in many ways an art form. However – once you someone puts their art on property which they do not own, public or private, it’s vandalism and makes our city look like a slum IMHO.

    1. I don’t see very much in MLT, but I’ve seen it in Shoreline and other places nearby. It makes me mad & I wish the cops could catch them and make them do community service for MONTHS. Starting with having to paint over what they put up.

  3. if graffiti were legal, I think we’d be seeing a lot better art up – with competition and people not having to rush their work – MLT can be a little gray around the edges and it would be nice to see more color on the walls – as long as it’s done respectfully with a sense of community in mind – not talking about mindless taggers and hatemongers, but genuine street art.
