The Mountlake Terrace High School cross country teams capped off a superb season Saturday as the girls squad placed 5th and the boys team grabbed 10th at the WIAA 3A State Cross Country Championships at Pasco.

Both the Glacier Peak girls team and the North Central (Spokane) boys team won their second state championships in a row at the meet.

The MTHS girls earned their fifth place spot by placing two runners in the top ten, and missed out on a fourth place team finish by just one point. The girls were led by freshman Katherine Gustafson, whose time of 18:48.1 on the 5,000 meter course at Sun Willows Golf Course was good for sixth overall. Teammate Sophia Nelson, also a freshman, placed ninth with a time of 18:58.9.

The Hawks were one of only three girls teams to place two runners in the top ten.
Other Hawks competing in the state meet included Ella Schroth (18th place), Katherine Walter (25th), Maddie Dellinger (99th) and Vesta Baumgartner (107th).

For the Terrace boys, their 10th place finish was paced by senior Jack Pearce, who grabbed 25th place overall with a time of 16:09.5. Other Hawk placements were Peter Kidane (47th), Wyatt Allemann (54th), Nathan Sparks (61st), Chris Baumgartner (75th), Conrad Bratz (94th) and Taron Castleton (104th).

This was the first year ever that both the MTHS girls and boys cross country teams qualified for the state meet in the same season.
