First responders from nearly a dozen local agencies helped make holiday wishes come true for 150 local kids on Wednesday night during Shop with a Cop at Target in Lynnwood.
The event brought in kids in need from within the Edmonds School District to pick out a gift with a local police officer, firefighter or military member. During Wednesday’s event, responders came from the Mountlake Terrace Police Department, Edmonds Police Department, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, Mukilteo Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Fire District 1 and the military.
Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Greg Wilson said this sort of event helps cops relate to kids in their communities.
“We often deal with families in traumatic situations,” he said. “This is a good way to have a positive contact with the people we serve. It puts a smile on their faces.”
Mountlake Terrace City Councilmember Seaun Richards was also at the event. He held an event at Emerald City Harley-Davidson last week that raised about $15,000 for Shop with a Cop.
“I came from a background where they didn’t appreciate cops and first responders,” Richards said. “It’s great for me to see people smile and react positively with law enforcement. Cops wanted to reach out and be in the community and this is a great way to do that.”
