For 80 minutes the Mountlake Terrace Hawks held their own against the Inglemoor Vikings, playing to a 0-0 tie as the final whistle blew.

But a decision to extend the non-conference girls soccer match into sudden death cost the Hawks as they gave up a goal 90 seconds into overtime and were saddled with a 1-0 loss to the Vikings Thursday at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell.

Inglemoor’s Sadie Sheller muscled in a long cross from teammate Kelsy Berge at the left post to give the Vikings the win over Mountlake Terrace.

The defeated dropped the Hawks’ season record to 1-1.

Despite the loss, spirits were still high on the Hawk sideline after the game. “My hope is the girls see that as a learning experience and not as a defeat tonight,” said coach Evan Hatch. “We all want to walk away from tonight’s game like it was a win because we absolutely played some of the best soccer that this program has (seen) in years.”

“The defense played particularly well tonight,” Hatch said. “(Goalkeeper) Madi Sadler had a really great game against a really tough team that was putting a lot of shots on goal.”

Sadler, a junior, is in her first year at Mountlake Terrace after transferring to the school from out of state. “I couldn’t be happier with her performance,” Hatch added.

The Hawk defense, which hadn’t given up a goal for the first 160 minutes of the season before Inglemoor’s game-winner in overtime, is anchored by another newcomer to the team, freshman central defender Abby Johnson.

“Abby, a ninth grader – fresh on the team – had to step into a really important defensive role, and today particularly was the most disciplined player on our team,” Hatch said. “She has an incredible ability to be calm and poised, even against really tough players.”

On Thursday Johnson kept Inglemoor’s big senior striker Julia Brocksmith off the scoreboard. “She was a very good player,” Johnson admitted.

Playing against the opposing team’s top scorers is a challenge Johnson relishes. “I really like to look for good competition,” she said. “Being a defender, I like to play against good forwards. I think it’s fun.”

While all Wesco 3A soccer matches go to a 10-minute overtime if the score is tied after regulation time expires, non-conference matches generally don’t get extended into extra time unless coaches agree to it. Hatch defended his decision to agree to a sudden death “golden goal” overtime in Thursday’s matchup.

“Regardless of how tonight’s overtime went, if I could do it all over again I would absolutely chose to do it because they need that experience of overtime,” he said. “To get use to that feeling of how short it is; you might make some different decisions in overtime because of how short a time frame it is.”

“I don’t think it’s about the score and the result; we need to always be focusing on how to get better, how to improve,” Hatch added.

Mountlake Terrace will take on another KingCo 4A foe in their next match, a Tuesday, Sept. 15 clash against the Newport Knights at Edmonds Stadium.

In other MTHS sports action on Thursday, the volleyball team got roughed up in their season opener, losing 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-10) to the visiting Skyline Spartans. The boys tennis team came out on the winning end of a 4-3 score, defeating the Meadowdale Mavericks in a Wesco 3a matchup played at Meadowdale High School.
