Field and trees charred at Brier Elementary after Wednesday fire

The field at Brier Elementary School and some surrounding brush was burned in a fire on Wednesday afternoon around 4:30 p.m.

Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said firefighters needed to cut a lock on the gate to access the playground area of Brier Elementary. The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes, leaving a 60-foot by 60-foot square of brush and trees charred.

Hynes said several 9-1-1 calls were made reporting the fire. Some of them reported hearing fireworks being set off in the area just before the fire.

The amount of damage to the school’s field is unknown.
