The postseasons for Mountlake Terrace High School baseball and softball teams came to an end Saturday as the boys lost their first-round WIAA 3A State Baseball Tournament game to Columbia River (Vancouver) 5-4 and the girls fell in 3A District Softball Tournament play to Meadowdale, 4-3.

Both MTHS teams lost their final game in the last inning.

The boys found themselves in a tight game with the Chieftains of Columbia River, scoring a single run in the first inning, only to fall behind 2-1 after two. The Hawks scored three in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead, but fell apart in the last inning. With two outs and needing just one more strike to end the game, instead Terrace gave up a game-tying RBI triple and then an RBI single that put Columbia River ahead for good.

Columbia River collected half of their total hits for the game in that final inning.

The girls were also involved in a nail-biter. Meadowdale took an early 3-0 lead, but the Hawks scored one in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to tie the game. The Mavericks pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off victory.

The Meadowdale softball team went on to beat Sedro-Woolley in a later game on Saturday to earn a spot in the 3A State Tournament.

The baseball squad ends its season with a record of 14-9 and the crown of District 1 Champions. The softball team finished with a record of 15-9.

By Doug Petrowski

The fields are now set for the Aug. 7 primary election for state offices, including State Legislative District 1 Senate and House positions. All three current incumbents in District 1 have challengers for their seats.

In the race for State Senator, incumbent Rosemary McAuliffe (D) is up against Guy Palumbo (D) and Dawn McCravey (R). On the House side, Position 1 incumbent Derek Stanford (D) is in a crowded field with Greg Rankich (D), Sandy Guinn (R) and Brian Travis (R). For Representative Position 2, incumbent Luis Moscoso (D) will face off against Mark T. Davies (R).

Those who live east of I-5 in Mountlake Terrace still reside within Legislative District 1, but those who live west of I-5 near Lake Ballinger and in the Melody Hill area are now part of Legislative District 32. The change is part of statewide redistricting approved on Jan. 1.

In Legislative District 32, State Sen. Maralyn Chase is midway through her four-year term that doesn’t expire until 2014. In the House races, Position 1 incumbent Cindy Ryu (D) will be running against Randy J. Hayden (R). In Position 2, incumbent Ruth Kagi (D) is facing Republicans Robert Reedy and Eric R. Alvey.

In each race, the top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will move on to the general election in November.

Moscoso, who is running for a second term in the State House, began his re-election effort on Thursday evening at the Nile Shrine Golf Center.

When asked why he chose the Nile for the campaign kick-off, Moscoso responded, “This is my home town; I live in Mountlake Terrace. This is also where I announced my first run for office two years ago.”

Another Mountlake Terrace resident, Robert Reddy, is taking advantage of the redistricting change and running in the 32nd District, Position 2 race. Reedy made an unsuccessful bid for Mountlake Terrace City Council last fall; he also ran unsuccessfully for state House Representative in 1986 and 1990.

Mountlake Terrace police made more traffic stops and issued more citations for traffic infractions during the first quarter of this year compared to the first quarters of 2011 and 2010, according to statistics released by the police department this week.

Drivers were pulled over by officers 2,292 times in the first three months of 2012, up from 1,947 stops in January-March of 2010, and 1,870 stops in January-March of 2011. As a result of those traffic stops, 1,237 tickets were issued in January-March of this year, compared to 927 in January-March of 2010 and 1,036 in January-March of 2011.

The numbers were part of the 2012 First Quarter Code Enforcement and Crime Statistics Report given during the City Council work/study session May 17.

Police Chief Greg Wilson and police department leadership have placed an emphasis on patrols watching for traffic infractions and stopping drivers for moving violations. Both traffic stops and infractions written in the city have risen significantly from the first quarter of 2008, when 1,316 stops and 584 infractions were written. Wilson took over the top job in the department in August, 2008.

“We’re measuring traffic stops, but a lot of crime is discovered during traffic stops,” reported Assistant Chief Pete Caw. “It’s not unusual to make drug arrests, DUI arrests, driving while suspended arrests, warrant arrests.”

“All the bad guys seem to drive, and it’s a really good way to contact them,” Caw added.

By emphasizing active patrol stops on city streets, police are highly visible to the public and become a deterrent to overall crime, according to Caw. “When an officer makes a traffic stop and is standing outside an offender’s vehicle, people pass by, people see it,“ Caw said. “It tends to have a psychological effect; it helps us reduce crime.”

Councilmember Seaun Richards asked Chief Wilson if the patrols constituted “aggressive police activity” that some might call “being a revenue generator for Mountlake Terrace.” Wilson responded, “It’s more a proactive approach, aggressive way of dealing with misbehavior within the city. We want to make this a safe place to live.”

Wilson also commented on other statistics in the report. Although there hasn’t been a significant increase of violent crime in the city so far this year, “we did see a slight increase in property crime, burglaries, but that’s not unique to Mountlake Terrace,” Wilson said. “It’s occurring throughout the region.”

Police are working to address that issue through “proactive work by our detective division,” Wilson said. “We’ve been very successful in identifying a number of people, and arresting those individuals, who were responsible for several burglaries.

“I’m very pleased with the results that we’ve been able to accomplish,” Wilson said.

The police department’s first-quarter report also presented statistics covering calls to 911, filing of court cases, revenue collected from fines and electronic home monitoring, traffic accidents, code and parking enforcement, animal control and monitoring of sex offenders.

Story and photo by Doug Petrowski

For a few weeks it’s been a demolition zone, but soon it will become an inviting space for fun and enjoyment.

With debris cleared and the parking lot resurfaced, the next step for Firefighters Memorial Park at 228th Street Southwest and 39th Avenue West is to plant new grass in the area where Fire Station 18 use to sit. The newly-graded ground is scheduled to be hydro-seeded Monday. Temporary fencing will keep visitors off the seeded area for approximately eight weeks.

Demolition of Fire Station 18, which sat in front of the park, began last month; materials from the building were separated, with steel, wood, brick and concrete sent to various recyclers. The remaining materials were trucked to the transfer station.

Ever since Snohomish County Fire District 1 moved operations of Fire Station 18 in December 2010 to its new facility at 21206 Poplar Way in Brier, the city has discussed how to revamp the site. The city’s Recreation and Parks Advisory Committee is compiling testimony from community meetings, and seeking input from the Fire District 1 Foundation and the local branch of the International Association of Fire Fighters concerning plans for the expansion of the park.

Tentative plans call for relocating the play equipment in the back of the park up closer to 228th Street. Possible additions to the park include additional fencing, a lit flagpole, new walkways and a fallen firefighters’ memorial.

Fire District 1 has in its possession an 8-foot World Trade Center steel beam salvaged from Ground Zero; the City of Mountlake Terrace has formally requested a part of the beam to possibly be used in a memorial at the park. A final decision as to the fate of that beam is expected within the next few weeks.

Cost to the city for demolition and removal of the 48-year-old building, re-grading of the property, and expansion and resurfacing of the parking lot was approximately $65,000.

This event is held in honor of Sue Gifford, mother of Carol Hardy, who co-owns Hardy Golf along with her husband, PGA Pro Tyrone Hardy.

Sue Gifford passed away from metastatic melanoma, and Carol and Tyrone Hardy work tirelessly to raise awareness of the effects of skin cancer and prevention. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society and are specifically earmarked for skin cancer/melanoma.

The tournament is an 18-hole, four-person scramble, and walk-in entries will be accepted, Carol Hardy said. The entry fee is $60 per person and includes continental breakfast, lunch, tee prizes and golf. Check-in begins at 7 a.m.
