This is another in a series of articles previewing the MTHS fall sports teams.

Last year the Mountlake Terrace High School girls volleyball team started the season red hot, winning the first six matches and looking like a team to contend with going into Wesco Conference play. But the squad cooled off, losing seven of eight league games and ending the year with a record of 7-7 and out of the postseason. The team is determined not to repeat that scenario in 2013.

“We want to go to districts and go to state; this is our year,” said senior and team co-captain Justine Kelly. “We say this every year, but we all want it this year. Everyone wants to go, so that’s our goal.”

The Hawks opened their season with a strong performance Saturday, Sept. 7, finishing second in the 16-team Mariner Classic Volleyball Tournament. The team won five matches before finally succumbing to the tourney champions Bainbridge, 25-18, 25-20 in the finals; one of Terrace’s five victories at the invitational was over the Spartans earlier in the day.

Mountlake Terrace is loaded with returning seniors this year; sharing the captain duties with Kelly are seniors Madison Eich and Meg Roberts; senior Micha Jackson returns and will see plenty of action this season, as will juniors Emily Eich, Alisha Clingan, Ali Hitchcock and Nicki Bouche.

Kelly takes on her role as a team leader with enthusiasm and intensity. “I just try to keep everyone fired up, and keep everyone in the game,” she admitted.

After their strong showing at Mariner, the team is ready to get the regular season started and begin their quest for postseason qualification. “It will be interesting to see what happens this season,” Eich said.

The Hawks will get tested right out of the gate with a non-league match-up at Meadowdale on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Mavericks are considered the favorites to win the Wesco South Conference championships. Game time is 7 p.m. Terrace travels to Marysville-Pilchuck on Sept. 17 before the first home match of the year, a Sept. 19 contest against Lynnwood.
