Edmonds School District honors top scholar athletes, coaches, community members
An annual tradition since 2001, the Edmonds School District on Wednesday night threw a banquet to honor the multi-sport graduating senior athletes who also are outstanding scholars, and also provided awards to coaches and community members from each school who support district athletes and athletic programs.
A total of 17 students — four athletes from each of the district’s high schools that have interscholastic athletic programs, plus one student athletic trainer — received scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 each.
And the winners announced Tuesday were:
Mountlake Terrace High School
Community members: Seaun and LaRae Richards, owners of the Red Onion Restaurant, who have raised thousands of dollars for MTHS athletics and other student programs.
Coach: David Whalen, cross country and track coach
Taylor Arbuckle, track and field/cheer, Western Washington University, elementary education, $1,000
Blake Fernandez, basketball/track and field, University of Washington biology or chemistry, $2,000
AnhViet Nguyen, basketball/tennis, Stanford University/international relations, $3,000
Christina Wimmer, soccer/track, Shoreline Community College, nursing, $1,000
Lynnwood High School

In addition, District Athletic Director Julie Stroncek recognized Dr. Jim Hsu with the Director’s Award, for his “countless hours of volunteer service as the team doctor for all four of our high school football teams.” A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Hsu has been giving up his Friday nights each fall since 2005, making himself available on the sidelines of all Edmond District stadium games, she added.
