How to Eat (By Yourself) In MLT

If you’re like me, (….that means “single,”) it’s not always fun to think about food. By the time I come home from work, I don’t exactly want to prepare a gourmet meal for my lonesome, yet hitting up the drivethru for the 3rd night in a row is not going to help me find a boyfriend anytime soon. Luckily, there are several options, whether the mood strikes you as lazy, broke, or just incapable of cooking should you give it a go anyways.

Are you…Lazy?

It’s ok. You got up at 6, spent an hour – each way – in traffic to get to the office and back, and you still need to hit the gym, do a load of laundry and take your best friend for a walk. You just don’t have TIME to eat, let alone the energy to make a meal. Instead of burgers via the drive thru again (and you know where I’m talking about,) consider grabbing a quick slice of pizza with a salad at Sorelli Pizza (22402 44th Avenue West), or stop by Little Caesar’s (4311 212th Street SW) for one to-go. Papa John’s delivers, and on a weeknight they are wicked fast. (Proof? They were at my door within 15 minutes one recent Tuesday night. And yes, it was fully cooked.) I’m also a fan of calling ahead for teriyaki (Bento Teryaki – near Azteca – and Fuji Teryaki – near QFC – are both great options), or stopping by Pho Tran’s (21919 66th Avenue West) for some Vietnamese noodle soup to take home (which is also great if you are battling allergies or a cold.) Lazy AND busy? Save half for lunch or dinner tomorrow.

Are you…Broke?

I don’t know if it’s a cause or effect, but being single is synonymous with, well, being broke. Whether you’re perpetually near the red or just spent too much at the bar this weekend, you still need to eat. If you can spare enough cash for groceries, check out the grocery mailers in your mailbox every Tuesday. (Yes, those are the flyers you ignore and throw out.) Price compare and start shopping on Wednesday for the new sales – or, stop by Roger’s Marketplace (23120 56th Avenue West) for groceries that are seriously cheap. (On that note, the Sunday paper is a great source of coupons. Make it a habit and start counting your monthly savings.) A surprisingly affordable food that’s budget friendly? A roasted chicken from the QFC or Alberston’s deli can make sandwiches and salad for the whole week. And if you must stock up on ramen, you may be amazed at how versatile these cheap yet delicious noodles can be. Check out ramenlicious.com for some recipes to keep your broke self from getting too bored.

Are you…Burning Water?

Once upon a time, I was making macaroni and cheese, because I’ll admit, I can’t cook. However, I can’t cook so bad, I ended up…burning the water. End of story, I know I’m not alone. If you need to learn a lesson or two, whether the basics or something to impress a cute boy, visit Edmonds Community College’s culinary school for cooking classes. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, the school’s not-for-credit ArtsNow program even has a class this summer to teach you the basics of beer.

  1. If you don’t care to drive thru for hamburgers, go to Red Onion, pick up or sit and maybe grab a scoop of ice cream while you’re at it. Their burgers are superior to the burgers you’re thinking of, I’m sure.

    1. Great idea – grabbing a burger and a shake togo from Red Onion is another good option (and you’re right, they are *much* better than the won’t-be-named “other” places!)
