City receives grants to help fund LED fixtures

The City of Mountlake Terrace has been awarded an $80,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to replace existing streetlights with new energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures.

The project will replace 248 existing city-owned street light fixtures with new LED retrofits. The total project cost is estimated at $240,000. Snohomish PUD has also pledged $40,000 of incentives to support the project, bringing the city’s cost down to approximately $120,000.

When completed, the project will result in annual energy savings of $16,000 and reduce expenses by $9,000 per year to operate and maintain streetlights. The fixtures will be brand new and have a significantly longer service life requiring essentially no maintenance. The city expects a return on investment for the city-funded portion within five years.
