City Considering Neighborhood Name Changes

You may or may not know this, but Mountlake Terrace has 6 official neighborhoods. The official neighborhood names are Melody Hill, Lake Ballinger, Town Center, Gateway, East Terrace and North Terrace.

The way you can tell if the community has agreed with a neighborhood name is if you see it in the names of apartment complexes, business names and development names. A few examples of these in Mountlake Terrace would be Gateway Auto Repair, Melody Hill Village and Lake Ballinger Estates. The “Town Center” neighborhood is in a bit of a transition so we haven’t seen that name pop up any where yet.

I’ve heard people use four of these names but never have I heard anyone refer to their neighborhood as “East Terrace” or “North Terrace.”

Recently, the Planning Commission decided to bring up the issue of these two neighborhood names to the City Council and recommended that a potential name change be looked at. Later this year the Planning Commission and City Council will look at the issue more closely and possibly come up with new neighborhood names (along with public input) for East Terrace and North Terrace.

See below for a map of the City neighborhoods.

One idea that was brought up at the Council meeting was to incorporate “Cedar” in to the name for East Terrace since it is already used in the neighborhood (Cedar Plaza, Cedar Terrace Apartments). Do you live in East Terrace or North Terrace? Have an idea for a new neighborhood name? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I live in North Terrace, but really think it should now be called ‘That Part of Town’, so that’s my vote. šŸ™‚

  2. In 1976, the year I moved into MLT from Lynnwood, my neigborhood district was called Woodlark. This was the original name from the early 60’s when the homes were built. Not sure if this was thought up by the city or the developer but I like it. This area is center and slightly east. Wonder what other forgotten names were given to our neighborhoods.

  4. I like the idea of the including Cedar in the name for East Terrace, particularly since it’s in use (Cedar Plaza, Cedar Terrace, Cedar Way Elementary, etc.). Possibly Cedar View?
