City Council Position 1

We now have less than a month until the election in November so we will be highlighting each of the four Mountlake Terrace City Council positions and candidates.

Running for position 1 is incumbent Rick Ryan and Ann Nygaard.

Rick Ryan

Rick and his wife have lived in Mountlake Terrace for 24 years. Rick was appointed to the city council in February of 2008 after Angela Amundson resigned from the council. While he’s not serving as a council member, Rick is a 4th grade teacher in the Mukilteo school district. He also owned a music store in Mountalke Terrace for a few years that was located in Cedar Plaza.

Rick comes from a family very involved in local and state government. His father served as King County and Washington State Parks Director and as Deputy King County Executive under Governor John Spellman. He has several brothers who are involved in local government as well. Rick’s wife, Judy, serves as chair of the city’s Arts Advisory Commission.

Ann Nygaard

Ann Nygaard moved to Mountlake Terrace 33 years ago with her husband and two children. She worked in the health insurance industry until 2007 when she retired. When Ann’s kids were younger she was involved in Campfire, Boy Scout, School Board and sports. Last year, Ann was appointed as Recreation and Parks commissioner and she has been involved in the Mountlake Terrace Garden Club for several years. Recently, she has gotten invovled with MLTDOG, the group of resident who helped bring the dog park to MLT and take care of it.

Ann lost her son in 2004 and with the help of Mountlake Terrace and Brier eagle scouts and donations was able to put a bench in his memory at both the Brier skate park and the Mountlake Terrace dog park. Ann is also a member of the MLT senior center, the MLT friends of the library and helps with the Arts of the Terrace art show.
