Cedar Way Elementary up for $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant

Cedar Way has been working for five years raising money to replace an old, out of date and barely safe playground. But with budget cutbacks and recession pressures, it has been difficult to raise the necessary funds to purchase expensive playground equipment.

Today Cedar Way Elementary school takes a step closer to realizing a new playground and student garden space. The Cedar Way Playground Committee’s application has been accepted by the Pepsi Refresh Foundation to compete for a $50,000 grant as part of their online voting competition in the month of May.

In 2010, Pepsi will give away millions of dollars for good ideas that make the world a better place. Who decides what a good idea is? Online voters have one month to cast 10 votes a day for good ideas that have been submitted from all over the U.S. in categories such as Education, Health, Arts & Culture, Food & Shelter, the Planet and Neighborhoods.

“This would be a great win for our community to build a safe play space for our kids”, according to Joy Muller, Co-Chair of the Cedar Way Play Ground Committee. “It would take us several more years of bake and gift wrap sales, walk-a-thons and donation appeals to be able to raise the funds necessary to build an even standard elementary school playground.”

“We’re a rich community in spirit, but not in budget” says Laura Baker, Cedar Way Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Co-President. “It just takes each of us telling our friends, co-workers and family to vote, and then all of us voting every day in May. If we can do that, we can win this grant. It really comes down to getting the support  the hearts and minds of our community to win.”
