Customers may use Snohomish County’s transfer stations at Airport Road in Everett or in Arlington during the Mountlake Terrace closure. The facility will
reopen Sunday, October 2. For more information on Snohomish County’s Solid Waste Division Facilities, please visit www.snoco.org or call (425) 388-3425.

UPDATE 11:30am:

Police and Fire are on the scene. People were evacuated from about four homes in the area. There were no injuries reported. Shoreline Fire Department is taking the lead. Seattle City Light will be turning off power in the area. Air quality is being monitored.

You may or may not know this but MLTnews is, for the most part, run by one person. Over the past almost 2 1/2 years we haven’t gone more than a couple days without posting a news story on MLTnews. After just wrapping up a very, very busy season in life and welcoming a beautiful new daughter to my family I’ve decided that I need to take a short break from the frequent MLTnews posts.

From now until some time around September 1st, here’s what’s going to happen.

• Posts on MLTnews.com will be infrequent and likely only major news and some breaking news items will be posted.
• I’ll still be checking email and following up on major tips but things like event postings and smaller news items won’t be posted until September.
• All current advertisers will get the month of August for free since we anticipate traffic will be lower.
• If you have info you want to get out to the Mountlake Terrace community, post it on our Facebook Page and we will likely be reposting these items on our Facebook page during August to share with our readers.
• Unfortunately I won’t be spending this vacation in Hawaii so I’ll still be around town. Feel free to say hi if you see me.
• Keep up to date with City happenings from the official Twitter and Facebook accounts for the City of Mountlake Terrace.
• If you have questions about anything Mountlake Terrace related just ask on our Facebook page because there are generally lots of people willing to chime in.

In addition, new building identification signs were installed at the Police Station and the Operations Facility. A new metal sign to mark city entrances on less traveled routes has also been developed and installed.

One of City Council’s goals is to promote a positive and attractive Mountlake Terrace image. In 2006, a Sign Committee, comprised of Recreation and Parks and Public Works employees, was asked to propose recommendations to improve the signs and monuments used to distinguish the entrances to the city.

The recommendations included developing new metal signs to replace existing signs and expanding the use of the popular concrete monuments signs.

This week, the Friends of the Library will join in to promote the Mountlake Terrace Open House and Book Sale, Saturday, 10am-2pm.

The award program, which recognizes property owners who take pride in their properties was established to build community pride, enhance the city’s image, and promote conservation. There are five categories of awards and nominees are judged against properties within each neighborhood: Cedar Terrace, Gateway, Lake Ballinger, Melody Hill, Cascade View and Town Center. Nominees are judged against properties within the same neighborhood: Cedar Terrace, Gateway, Lake Ballinger, Melody Hill, Cascade View, and Town Center. Best Maintained Awards reflect the efforts of the owners or occupants whose high standards for building and yard maintenance contribute to the
character of our neighborhoods and city. The Transformation Awards recognize neglected properties renovated to become assets to the community.

Help the City find those hidden gems that have made significant improvements, especially over the past year. The Sustainable Award honors property owners who best utilize green features such as solar heating, natural cooling and native landscaping to help protect and preserve the environment.

Nominations forms, available online at www.cityofmlt.com and at city facilities, will be accepted through May 24, 2011. Anyone can submit a nomination and you may nominate your own home or business.Properties being marketed for sale are not eligible. Properties will be photographed for judging and awards will be presented at a recognition event that takes place at Ballinger Clubhouse in September.
