The Shorewood T-Birds have dominated on the baseball diamond during the first half of the 2014 season, scoring an average of almost 8.5 runs per game while holding their opposition to just one run each outing. Their 11-0 record leading into Tuesday’s match-up with the Mountlake Terrace Hawks had pushed them to the top spot in a state poll of 3A prep baseball clubs.
Despite the challenge facing them, the Hawks put up a strong fight against Shorewood, holding the T-Birds to just two runs and six hits in seven innings. But the T-Birds eventually prevailed 3-2 in 10 innings at Meridian Park.
After Shorewood’s Max Wagner and Steffen Torgensen drilled one-out singles, teammate Kory Longaker launched a deep drive in the left field gap for a walk-off double to end the game. The three hits were given up by Hawk Jason Shevenko in relief of starter Dominic DeMiero, who had Shorewood on its heels during the previous nine innings.
While Shevenko was saddled with the loss, it was his offensive efforts that had given the Hawks an early lead. Shevenko batted 3-for-5 with two doubles and the only Terrace RBI in the game.
Torgersen came in to relieve T-Bird starter Sam Boone in the eighth inning and retired nine of the 10 Hawks he faced in the extra frames to earn the win.
The two teams go at it again on Wednesday, April 16, in the second of their three-game series. Game two will be at Mountlake Terrace High School; first pitch is slated for 4 p.m. The series will close on Friday, April 18, with a 7 p.m. game at Meridian Park Field in Shoreline.
